Got a friend that's going to do a Galveston-Key West-Galveston run in a sailboat in 3 weeks. They'll be running about 150 miles off. They want to put out 2 trolling lines in hopes of a fresh fish dinner.

Showed him an inexpensive (West Marine) combo rig that will work well for that purpose. What lures would you guys recommend to troll at 6 knots for anything that far out? I imagine they have a chance at Tunny or Dolphin....or whatever.

Thanky

Several options.Plastic molded fish with or without a skirt. Jellybelly. Mann Stretch 30. Cedar plug. On the lipped plugs like the Stretch 30, the tackle may have to be a little more substantial. If wahoo are a possibility, wire leader may be necessary.

Sports Authority carries a lot of stuff you can drag behind a boat & catch fish with.

Billy Bait - Mini Turbo Slammer's, or Cedar Plugs.

I don't agree with Greg about a stretch 30 as a sailboat cannot be brought to a stop or even slowed down to where a Stretch would be easy to crank in. They're not easy whenthe boat is stiopped. What he needs is a streamlined lure like a Billy Bait Mini Turbo Slammer or a Cedar Plug. A regular sized Billy Bait is too big to drag at 6 knots. It's too slow and would sink

Jack's right. I hadn't thought of the difficulty in cranking in a big lipped plug from a moving boat. It ain't easy, fer sure. Cedar plugs come in a variety of paint jobs, from plain wood (which work fine) through various fishy paint schemes.

The small rattlejets will pop the surface at slow speeds and have worked well for us for dorado and tuna on the other ocean:D

I'll find a source online and give him your suggestions. I'll also tell him we expect a fishing report......
