thought I might post this.. like anyone gives a hoot.. we went on a 30 day cruise starting Jan 25th from Ft Laud thru the Canal to San Diego and did the return trip ending in Ft Laud on Feb 24th.. burp..burp.... different itinerary each way except for Cabo and Cartegena on both ends of the cruise..

anyway... here's where I fished and what I caught..booked them all thru the ship to assure that I'd get back in time for the ship's sailing..

fished Half Moon Cay, Bahamas on the first day out of Ft Laud.. that's Holland America's private island in the central Bahamas right across from the southern tip of Eleuthera... overnite those were the ruffest seas on the entire trip.. 12-14 down to 8-10''.. and yop I was out in the latter that morning..weeee..... fished there numerous times before .. usually get mahi ..cudas.. tuna.. this time.. only a bunch of medium sized cudas...

this was the first time I've been back 'cruisin' the Pacific since April-1967- when I went on my first 'cruise' ever.. from Oakland Army Terminal in SF Bay to Vietnam.. 22 days of not fun..it was FREE.. 'as in if it's FREE it's for me..but never had a Lido deck with 'grand boo-fays'

the next fishing charter I had booked was in Acapulco .. just two of us from the ship.. I got a 90# Sailfish.. let the other guy miss three hookups.. they were using regular J-hooks...and before I had the chance to make sure they were catch and release the mate bopped the Sail on the head and kept it.. hay.. I was in their land so had no choice..not happy... it was supposed to be C&R fishing that day.. had a few small bonitas ..nothing else good thru the trolling spread..

my next charter was in Cabo San Lucas.. what a beautiful scenic place.. outrageous raw beauty.. damn did I say that.. anyway we headed out.. five of us.. saw one marlin into the spread.. the mate pitched out a live large bait.. damn thing wouldn't take it.. he played with it and spit it away... NO fish caught at all.. in one of the premiere fishing spots.. did see plenty of whales.. I'd say in the hundreds.. not kidding.. water temps around 68-70*.. after the Marlin came thru the spread damn whales followed..pics to show them in the spread and next to the boat.. zippo on anything caught.. which was my biggest disappointment of any of the places I fished..

after hitting San Diego for that one day.. the ship just does a turnaround day .. leaves that same afternoon and start heading south again.. sure did get 'kewl' coming up that upper baja coast.. got into SD and it was 53* in the early morning hours

back in Cabo again two days later.. our schedule arrival was at 11am so after not catching a damn thing.. same as most others AI spoke to who did charters that day..I decided not to fish the second go round at Cabo...

next fishing stop was the next day in Mazatlan.. never got a hit .. the entire fleet of 25 boats caught one itty bitty striped marlin that I saw being taken off the boat in the marina.. a total bust.. they too also tout themselves as greatest fishing place.... I hope Zane does better than I did here..

overall Mexico didn't show me too much with its fishing.. I'm determined to get back to Cabo to give it another try( March 2009).. it's too pretty there not to catch fish there..

okay.. here goes.. Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala.. I get off our ship at 730am..walked over next door to the fishing marina.. they have two boats ready for our charters from the ship....Dockmaster said to me.. "you're gonna catch and see more sailfish than you've ever seen before"..I laughed....

all I can say is.. what a day.. two young mates and a Captain.. hmmm.. why do they need two mates I said to myself.... more hmmmmm??...it took us about an hour to run out to the Sailfish grounds.. about 20 miles out.. we started trolling about 845 or so...I asked the Captain how deep.. 300' to a dropoff of near 1K' further out.. we got the first hits in the fleet of 16 boats.. he radioed over to the rest as they w*rk together like most fleets do...

well it was world class fishing.. 30' smaller boat compared to some of the other boats around there.. 5 anglers fishing.. we raised 27 Sailfish.. caught 15 onto the boat.. 3 for each of us.. saw 3 Marlin into the spread.. no hits though on the marlin as the mates put out the bigger rigs...seemed like at times there were Sailfish free-jumping everywhere...the entire crew w*rked their butts off.. plus they fed us( this is also good!).. homemade hero 'sammiches'.. fresh fruit that was outrageously good...as much as we wanted.. we only fished for 4 1/2 hours.. as the ship was sailing early at 3pm.. had to be back onboard at 230.. we had about an hour left but we all agreed and decided to go back a bit early as each of us had an equal amount of Sails landed.. biggest fish landed was by the smallest guy on our boat 150#.. he weighed 155#.. the damn fish was really bigger than him..what a fishery.. a small sleepy fishing town along the Guatemala coast.. great day.. had a blast...ALL were CATCH and RELEASE.. ONLY CIRCLE hooks used.. ..they say the Sailfish in the Pacific are bigger than the Atlantic-Florida Sailfish.. from what I've seen that is very true.. I'm sure there are better or equal places to go Sailfishing down that way like Costa Rica and Panama.. but I haven't found them yet

I saw the Dockmaster after we returned.. had to tell him he was 'right on'.. he laughed and said.. " I told you".. a good guy..

here's the Puerto Quetzal-album with some of the pics from that day.... you can see the circle hook rigs/bait .. and there is even a short video I took showing how they rigged them.. the trolling speed and the spread.... as well as some of the Sails we all caught that day.. I'm on page 2 and page 5...

we have plans to go back to do this cruise again hopefully next March... a really great trip that was made even better by a great day of fishing.. it doesn't take much to make me happy..

oh.. forgot to mention before the 'Jaxsonville stallion' ask'es'es me.. how much weight did I gain.. surprisingly.. after getting back home I jumped on the digital scale the next morning.. 9 1/2 #'s.. I was shocked.. and especially very very very happy after 30 days of oink oink eating

here's all 9 albums I've uploaded so far to Webshots...have some more stops I have to add
http://community.webshots.com/user/stakeouttoo
each day is labeled.. just click on an album pic.. then you'll see multiple pages for each album.. rather than clicking each pic you can do a 'slideshow'.. link at both the upper right in the yellow box as well as beneath the album pics.. if you put your cursor over a pic in the slideshow and move it to the very bottom of the pic you'll see a popup bar to adjust the slideshow.. speed.. fwd/back. etc..

I took a total of 4778 pics on the trip..yop.. 4778... two cameras.. a Canon 700-IS( image stabilization) that I use as a pocket camera and take most of the pics on the fishing boat and around the towns with ..also just got a new Canon S5-IS 12x optical zoom... yop.. I am nutz..love that new S5 though.. Pat had her Canon SD 200.. she also took some pics.. maybe 100-150

JD..there here on my 5+ year old Gateway desktop's hard drive that is bursting at the seams.. thankfully I had enuff smarts last year to buy a backup external hard drive.. so I am 'golden'..

..if I had to upload all 4778 I would have missed my next cruise or make that cruises..... I just u/l them w/o editing at all.. what you see if what I took...I normally go thru them and tweak the pics when I don't have so many.. editing them with Paint Shop Pro X2 ..I also uploaded them at the resolution they were taken at rather than knocking them down.. Webshots did that for me.. but the u/l for that many pics at those resolutions.. 1.8mb up to 3.2mb ...takes a long time.. I tried to u/l a good blend of the trip's pics..

along with my two cameras I had 6 2gb SD cards.. 1 4gb SD card( the Canon S5 can handle this one) and a couple of 1gb cards.. every day while on the cruise I d/l the pics from that day to my Laptop..(just in case).. I never reused any SD card.. when I got home I transferred all the pics in their dated folders from the Laptop to my old Gateway PC via my home netw*rk.. everything w*rked out as planned..including backing up onto the external hard drive for the Desktop.

I just now u/l some more into another album.. Golfe Dulce.. that makes 10 albums.. we cruised thru this area along Costa Rica while heading up the coast.. you can see some of the smaller Sailfish Resorts near Golfito along the coast.. a really pretty area...

glad I made your day Don.. it sure was a 'different and fantastic experience' for us having never sailed along that coast before..best cruise we've taken so far .. this was our 33rd cruise on Holland America.. have two on Celebrity and one on Royal Caribbean.. we like Holland and stick with it.. it's an 'older( than dirt) crowd'.. our cruising is usually in the Caribbean..

we're planning on going back next March hopefully

Sounds like a great trip, Ray. I can attest to the Pacific sails running larger than the Atlantics...by far. Ours here run around 60# for a big fella. The half dozen or so we caught out of Quepos, Costa Rica averaged over a hundred.

Circles are the way to go, fer sure. ~~Greg~~

looks like the ones we caught ranged from 90# up to the the big bubba at 150#... 'el grande'.. 'big juan' ..'big juan' the Captain was yelling when it came onboard.. the smallest guy on the boat caught it.. and he weighed only 155#.. the fish was really bigger and fatter than he was..

got a 'snake' question for you I'll put in another thread..

Great pix Ray. Are you using a point & Shoot or did you graduate to a DSLR I've got an Alaskan Cruise coming up in May, and an African photo safari next year. I figure I'll be taking at least that many photos on these two trips and need to start collecting SD/MCC cards

PK

both my current cameras are point and shoot..along with the other older two I have buried away these days... I was very tempted to get the new Canon 40D ( $1499).. I know someone ( BobAC/NJ who used to post here a long while back) just got one.. he loves it..replaced his other Canon 20D SLR but he's into surfing photography and pro stuff--weddings and such-- these days besides doing his fishing charters in AC-he's retired from 'the job' in AC...

I use the Canon 700is for a lot of stuff.. especially close by shots like on a boat fishing etc....it's a great 'pocket camera'.. has a 4x optical zoom with Image Stabilization... the Canon S5is...($369 at Costco cheaper elsewhere) I just got before the cruise.. I wanted it because it was e-z to carry although not for the pocket.. and mainly because it had a 12x optical zoom with Image Stabilization.. I opted not to get the SLR .. didn't want to mess around with changing lenses and all that good stuff.. the S5 w*rked for me on this cruise... just what I wanted it for.. probably doesn't come close to a Canon 40D or some of the other SLR's in quality of pics but it was okay for me.. bottomline.. it's all a tradeoff.. if you need a wide angle lens along with a telephoto lens for the Safari then the SLR would be the way to go.. but that's where the big bucks start coming in..

out of all the pics I couldn't lock on to..and no Image Stabilization in the world would have helped.. when we left Cartegena ( what the heck was I doing there.. am I nutz or what)..on the return trip back into the Atlantic .. seas built up that nite to 14'.. of course that was the nite of the Lunar Eclipse.. here I was alone on the top deck.. trying to point the camera at the friggin' moon straight above me.. getting dizzier and dizzier.. rockin' and rollin' like you wouldn't believe.. and no.. a small tripod that I had with me was useless in those conditions .. I tried to steady myself against a couple of beams on that deck.. no good.. it was a hoot.. thank God I could just walk inside off that deck and hit thee midnite boofay!!!!

that's what I did on the SD media cards.. everytime they went on sale at Costco with an instant rebate I bought them..I never wiped out any pics off the media cards I had with me.... I always take along my 14" laptop .. I download the pics everyday .. if I lose the media cards at least I have the pics I've taken so far saved..

It all started with Digitals for me, when I saw Monty's first one at one of the Grouper get togethers. I too, have loads of memory cards.

Jack. I have 2 DSLR's One older Minolta Dimage A1 and an Olympus Evolt with 2 lenses. I keep the SLR's for when I am in one spot for awhile, but do have a few point and shoot pocket cameras, for when I am out for the day. Love the SD cards, but with a few different cameras I have CF and x-D cards also. Matter of fact the Evolt takes both CF & x-D and can be alternated with a click of a button. I usually have a 2 gig of each in the camera.

I thank Monty for showing me the instant joy of Digitals.

guess I shoulda went back and re-read this article before I left on this last cruise.. I wouldn't have been so surprised that day in Guatemala...

it's from my Feb issue of Sport Fishing Magazine.. "Where To Find the Best Fishing on the Planet" article.. check out the February section.. Iztapa, Guatemala.. right next door to where I fished in Puerto Quetzal.. they moved the fleet to a new marina in PQ because of the ruff inlet they have at Iztapa ...over to where the new docks are for the cruise ships and larger boats..nice smooth inlet .. .

The G5 is a hell of a camera. I have the older G3 model and probably use it more then all the other ones. It is a great mid size and the 12x lens is fun to use.

Guatemala.. you say!!!!! Me thinks I have decided where the next vacation may take me!!! :p

if you go direct.. it's big bucks to stay and fish there from what I found out ...plus the airfare... supposedly Guatemala is not the safest of destinations unless you plan on staying at a place like Sailfish Bay Lodge... ca-ching.. ca-ching..$$$$ ... or similar
http://www.sailfishbay.com/
http://www.wheretofish.com/guatemala1c.html
http://www.tropicaldiscovery.com/special_interest/fishing/vacations.php

but I wanna go back.. waaaaa... waaaaa... :p fishing there for 3 or 4 days your arms would fall off...mine would... being in the 'Dirt' category these days....... only the great one...Mr Dirt himself--the 'Jaxsonville Stallion'... would be in tip top shape to handle it..
check these numbers out.. http://www.greatsailfishing.com/en/sailfish-capital.html

they say Costa Rica is excellent for Sailfish also ( safer there too).. Panama likewise.. but I can't believe it could be any better for catching and raising Sailfish than what I saw in Guatemala.. life was good that day...really really good

just to compare about the same time frame in fishing reports.. here's some from 'Z' up in Mexico...seems it's been kinda slow..
http://www.zihua.net/zip/links.php?page=http://www.sportfishing-ixtapa.com/reports.shtml

and that's the way it was the three other charters I did in Mexico prior to getting to Guatemala... I only had one Sailfish landed in Acapulco.. nuttin' in Cabo or Mazatlan....

looks like Guatamala is real good. I have always done well in Puerto Vallarta. Got this one in 2006.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c320/HBrody/Sail2.jpg

A Hell of a lot easier to bring in then the Marlin last year.

Any of you guys decide to head for Tamarino Beach in Costa Rica, I have an old friend that is a world renouned guide there.

I have seemed to have found my niche.. Sailfishing.. they put on a show...are spectacular fighters....but not too big like a Marlin... that you have to bust your culiones for an hour to get them in... just the 'right size'.... and they are pretty too..

while up/down the coast in Mexico a lot of people were talking about how slow the fishing was... guess that 'kewler' water came down too far this year

Nahhhhhh!!!! It is because the great Angler from Courtney  was there last Oct and either fished them out, or polluted the water.

Got nothing to do with me Howard-- I just took a leak overboard once!! And thats when we started catching dorado.. What I think is the cause is that Posidon got really pi##ed off at you throwing the El Capitains dog overboard in an attempt to chum up a marlin!!! That wasnt very nice now was it.....

hate to tell you this Ray, but you usually chum BEFORE you catch the fish. That Dog of the Captain/Owner was something. Climbed the ladder to the bridge, walked along the gunnels, while running. Urinated on Bryan's foot. Smartest Dog I ever saw. His critique of Bryan's fishing abilitiy was a tad harsh, but right on.

You won't be able to get one of those voice activated ones. Who understands Brooklynese? Can you imagine what it would print when you told them an address like "Toid and Toity Toid". Or asked a question about "Dem Bums"? Do not ask where "Coony Istand" is or "Natuns"
