I fished on Labor Day & we managed some yellowtail snappers that were as big as I have seen. Some were in the 3 pound range, which to youse guys is not a big fish, but that is a "flag" yellowtail. We also got a coupla nice ocean tallies (which eat better than snappers) and a kingfish. Then I w#$ked 3 days & I have to go fishing again tomorrow. I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Oh...we have had nearly a foot of rain in the last ten days..so much so that I just rescued a nice 2 1/2' brown watersnake (Nerodia taxispilota) from a neighbor's garage.

Storm here in VA has got the water looking bad. We were catching lots of big Croaker off the bulhead here on the James River near the Norfolk Naval Base up to 2 pounds. My brothers neighbor caught a 22 inch puppy drum after the storm.

Hopefully in 30 days the schoolie rockfish will show up around the bridges.

Finally got to fish with both Madson brothers on the same trip. Captain Chad ran the boat, while Captain Jason helped with the mating chores. No...that does not mean he did strange things to the fishermen.

The seas were nice, although the current was too fast for decent bottom fishing out in deeper water, so we eventually came in a bit & had some productive drifts. We hit the yellowtails pretty good, although none were as big as some of the ones we got on Monday's trip.

I had a fish on a guppy rig..two hooks above a 5 oz sinker on 30# leader, 20# line..that I knew immediately was more than that rig would handle. I fought it for about ten minutes, & began to think I might succeed when the leader broke, or was bitten through. Best guess is an amberjack, but we'll never know.

I did manage to bring home a cero mackerel as well as some yellowtails, a porgy, & thanks to Chad, a triggerfish. Oh..and enough blue runners for a batch of the world's best fish dip.

All six guys on board caught a meal or six & had a pleasant morning.

Back at the dock, I was toying around with the jack crevalles, & caught not one, but two snook on cut bait. The first was considerably short of the minimum 27", but the second was only an inch shy. As much as I was tempted to throw one in the cooler, both were released.

While I was cleaning fish at the house, I got a call from a panic-stricken woman with a diamondback rattler in her front yard. Twenty minutes later, I had it in a lockbox. I'll find a home for it this weekend.

My next trip out will be in two weeks, a night trip on the dark of the moon.
Stay tuned.

It is a breeding size adult..a solid four feet or a little more. I've contacted a friend already who will either find someone soon who can use it in a breeding program or release it in an area where it & people will be safe. Catching it was kind of tricky. It was just beyond a 4' hog-wire fence, next to a Ficus hedge. I didn't want it to get mixed up in the hedge, but couldn't get it to come back on the yard side of the fence. I wound up reaching the hook over the fence & lifted the critter all the way over the fence, & then into the lockbox. I told the ladies watching that that was durn near like I knew what I was doin'. The snake didn't strike or even rattle until it was in the box.

Tonite's entree will be fried porgy & perhaps cero mackerel with an oriental sweet & pungent sauce. I think I'll tempura some sweet potato too. If you've never had deep fried sweet potato, you don't know what you're missin'.

Well- I didnt say that I was going to STOP fishing-- just that I would have to stay pretty close to the barn! And I cant get much closer and still fish than I have been doing lately.:D

The launching ramp is 15min for the house and I have to run about 2 min before putting out the salmon gear. The nice thing about Pacific salmon is that after taking a turn around the Bering Sea, they come back to do the nasty thing in their home river. And they are BACK!!!

I had a hunch that the time was right three days ago--- Yep. Myself and 6 other boats ran into the motherload. But does the word spread fast-- next morning there were 12 boats-- that evening over 35 boats! Not only that, but the word spread to the killer whales who showed up for a feed. I am not going fishing this weekend-- I'll leave that for the poor working stiffs. The fish are still in good shape-- ranging from 15 to 40 lbs. And to think that earlier, I was spending all sorts of time and cash chasing the same fish further north..:o

Oh yes Rusty-- Life is good ( and better when we finally get Granny moved)

And I'm not from NC or SC, good ole Florida. I'm a swamp boy. Did you see what Ohio did to Texas. My son who lives in Odessa Texas will be crying in his Mount Gay.
