My Dell is starting to look like the bride of Frankenstien. I need something that will take an air card, let me plug in a full size keyboard and maybe do just a little work on images.

Mont. The netbooks are just that, sufficient for e-mail and internet browsing, but they don't have the capacity for image editing or much else. I recently bought a Dell netbook for my upcoming trip top Africa. It also will handle Skype.

I have an Acer1 netbook that we took to NZ with us. Good for viewing the SD camera chips and getting on the net to make reservations etc. Has a webcam and is wireless ready, but does not have cd drive. Need to use a flash drive for external storage.

But-- cheap like borsh-- less than $300 Can.

I have an Acer 10.1" Netbook.. it has 1gb RAM.. 160 gb hard drive..got it from Costco when they were running a 'mini-special' in early April..included a 6 cell battery rather than the standard 3 cell..on average gives it 6-7 hours of battery life...paid $350 with carry case and small USB mouse included... no DVD/CD drive so I bought an Iomega portable DVD/CD drive.. also on sale at Costco at 64.99... took it on our last cruise in late April... w*rks as good as my older Dell 14" standard laptop did for travel..actually better since the Acer is running XP not Vista like the Dell has

I have a couple of Image editing programs on it.. including the one I use the most at home.. Paint Shop Pro X2 Ultimate... never had any problems doing any light/basic image editing... I d/l all my pics I take while cruising to the netbook daily using the media card slot... good backup plus I have plenty of media cards so try to never re-use the same media card on a trip... just my way of backing up a backup

I bought it at Costco .. they give 90 days for an 'any reason' return for Computers.. Cameras.. Ipods.. TV's.. figured just in case it didn't w*rk out could always bring it back..

bottomline.. I love the damned thing.. small.. compact...super-lightweight... does every thing I want it to do as a great traveling mini-computer...and as with just about all Netbooks it runs XP ( yippee)
here's a pic of my 22" Desktop.. my Dell 14"laptop and the Acer 10.1"

and me taking a pic of all three with the webcam on the Acer taking a pic of me

here's the links at Costco... not running the 'mini-special' anymore so no extras except for the 6 cell battery pack.. you'll find it cheaper other places but mainly because it'll only come with a 3 cell battery... I wanted the 6 cell..

I have the Gateway LT1004, which is actually an Acer Aspire. I too got a portable CD/DVD reader and burner. With 3 usb ports you can add everything. 160 gig HD. Fun machine. Reads all the memory cards except CF. Will be great for taking to Mexico in Oct and being able to see the pictures each day and stay in touch with home.

I am real pleased so far. What I like the best is it uses XP and not that damn Vista.

yop... Acer bought out Gateway/E-Machines a year or so ago

the new replacement for Vista ----Windows 7--- should be coming out in October--but with previous MS releases they're always delayed-- it's supposed to be able to w*rk on Netbooks to eventually replace XP where Vista couldn't... I'm fine with XP.. :D

thanks guys, I think I am going to get me a new Dell mini and see how it does. Faith's cat took a bunch of keys off my old one and it's a pain for a touch typist when keys don't work right.

Ray, the 6 cell was a $30 upgrade. I spent a few extra bucks and got it loaded with software and it even gets digital TV. I got the Verizon air card built it. My daughter has already asked if she can take it to summer school. It's supposed to be here in about a month.

I was looking and the Gateway/Acer 3 cell is a Sanyo battery. I will probably get a backup. I also got the neatest pair of speakers for it that run off a USB port batteries own, or A/C power. Unbelievable sound. Insignia NS-PLTPSP. Got it at Best Buy.

lol, I thought that too, but the external DVD/CD burner is coming from Ohio. At least that's where it's being shipped from. I went right past Dell's place in Roundrock last week. Talk about a full parking lot. Someone's making some money in there.

It came in yesterday and I have been setting it up most of today. The really are kewl little computers and I can use the keyboard, no problem. I won't be tying a thesis on it or anything, but it's big enough for everyday use. The built in TV is neat too.
