View Full Version : Species ID?
The last few nights I've heard this noise in the mangrove trees across the canal. Tonight I heard it again - here it is, along with the sound of a stoo-oopid neighbor trying to quiet the noise by yelling 'hey' repeatedly:

This thing is very loud - could probably be heard a half-mile away. I haven't heard any reports of spaceship landings around here lately, so it is probably an earthly critter. I'm guessing it is a bird critter... perhaps some form of pteradactyl?? The sound of mangrove trees crunching under it's feet was very impressive.
Here is a picture of the place where I hear the noise - any thoughts?

Just a WAG, but to me it sounds more like maybe one of the escaped primates you hear about. It seems to react to the neighbor yelling at it, which doesn't seem that birdlike. Is it only at night?
GT
Yes, only happens at night. And I have seen some dead ducks floating down the canal lately. It is a pretty good sized nature preserve, and I've seen at least two bald eagles out there in the last couple of months.
I did a search for monkeys and tampa bay and found this - so you might be on to something...

Sounds to me like you got yourself a bonafide snipe right there, umm. Whatcha gotta do now is get yourself one big powerful flashlight, a real sturdy burlap bag, and a big stick and headout to that island after dark.
All kidding aside I think there might be some monkey hanky panky going on at fantasy island over there. :D Rusty
