Had a good weekend with the kids. We went out to the middle of the bay and watched fireworks Sunday night. Tampa, St. Pete and Clearwater all had big shows, visable in opposing directions from where we were at. The causeway had 'em all up and down both sides, and every neighborhood around the bay was blasting them off. The water was calm enough on the north side of the bridge to see reflections in all colors. The neighbor counted 31 boats go out and return from our canal that night. That's about everyone in the place, so it must be a tradition around here on the 4th.

With the exception of that night, it has been raining for a week. It is raining now. Yesterday the kids fished the dock in between rainshowers. They are getting to where they like to go down and fish by themselves, which is good. They still need me within yelling distance for when they catch something though. I like to see them become more independent, which will allow me to spend more time finding fish instead of messing with tangled tackle when we're on the boat. Seems that's all I do some trips, but it is getting better. When I was Ethan's age I was fishing for bluegill and crappies at Rocky Fork lake in Ohio, and a canepole or Zebco 404 was very user-friendly compared to the spinning reel he is learning on.

Ethan beat out his older brother in size and quantity but we counted 13 different species if the blue crab can be counted as a fish. He sure had a hold of that piece of fishbites bait. Y'all remember that stuff? I can't remember the guy's name but we put up banner ads on GG many years ago when he first got started. I have to say, especially for kids, that stuff works! I picked up a pack at Bass Pro for about $6. It has lasted 3 weeks, 3 of us fishing every weekend since. Normally we use shrimp or gulp and catch only catfish here at the dock, but yesterday with fishbites they caught ladyfish, jacks, whiting, redfish, pinfish, mangrove snapper, black drum, croakers, trout, toadfish, blue crab, and only one tiny catfish. And would you believe a big mullet even bit on the stuff?

Way to go. Glad they like fishing. As a kid, my Dad was not a Fisherman. It was my Grandmother that took me fishing. We rented small row boats out of Reynolds Channel off Far Rockaway NY and we would go for Fluke. Then she started taking me to, as she called it "Shipshit" Bay on Head boats (Ray will understand). Would fish for Porgies and Blackfish off the Tin Can Grounds and then head off to Long Branch, New Joisey for Fluke. That my friends was 64 years ago and I have not stopped since. BTW all started with hand lines. Got my first boat and bay rod when I was 13. I swear I still have it. It is a Berylium Copper Rod with a Penn Reel.

I have enjoyed every trip I ever took and have gotten to meet some of the greatest people in the world.......Other Fisherman and the highlight was meeting the Guys from this board.

took these pics when I was up there last week... looking across toward the fishing docks from the high dollar Manhattan Beach side of Sheepshead Bay..

used to be 30+ headboats going out every morning...3 to 4 to each dock... now I counted 4 going out at 7am for Fluke.. one at 8am.. and for the sleepers-in one at 9am.. that is it.... all are gone from all those docks along Emmons Avenue across from Randazzo's... a few of the larger ones like the Amberjack( our family used to know the family who ran it with Capt Tootsie Ardolino -- something about bent-noses but I won't get into that) and two or three more got converted from fishing boats to catering boats that do weddings ... bar mitzvahs and proms... who woulda thunk it...

If you can get them fishing early they will fish for life. I hooked both of my sons but was a little remiss with the first two granddaughters. my pride and joy is my youngest granddaughter Bella. This will be the seventh year that she will fish with me in Canada. She is turning 13 this year and I keep kidding her that she won't fish with me anymore after she meets "Bubba" Her answer warms my heart " when I meet him he had better fish". Here's a picture of the first year up north when we had to help her with the rod and fish. Now grandpa can't neven touch the rod. the second picture was last year and all I did was net and gaff

I started my son at about 3 years of age. We used to live by a flood control canal in Miami with a storm drain running from the street in the front yard to the canal in the back yard. I came home from work one day to see my son and a neighbor kid using my kite fishing rod and reel, dropping pieces of hot dog thru the storm drain. I figured it could not hurt the rod & reel too much and I let them be, going into the house to change and relax before dinner. About 10 minutes later, Corey came running into the house screaming "Dad, Come quick, I caught a fish, and it has whiskers!!" I went out and found a catfish on the line, but it was too large to get thru the grate covering the drain pipe. I lifted the grate, removed the fish and everyone was happy.

I used to be proud to claim that I taught him everything he knew about fishing, and he was good! This led to his career (thus far) as a Captain. Now, every time I fish with him, I learn something new from him and he has far outdistanced me in his knowledge and ability.

Give a child a hobby and you will enhance their lives . It brings back great memories of fishing in my youth.
