View Full Version : are you Florida GG's doing OK?
From here, it looks like a little rain and wind. Of course, no one tell the idjuts on the weather channel that. The guy on our local news is convinced it "might" turn this was and come up the Galveston Channel. I hope everyone is safe.
Just felt the first raindrops outside. Shouldn't see very much wind here, but I always welcome the rain. I know PK will blast me for saying that, but never listen to a guy who prefers Heinz garbage ketchup over the good stuff. :p

We had a total of 3/8 of an inch of rain. The top winds were 15 MPH, with gusts to 20 MPH. All of this was weather man's hype. The weather channel people have to justify their pay check. Some of the Yankee's that have lived here only a short time rushed out to but water, batteries and lot's of extra food. It's not time to worry till the gators in the canal bury in the mud.
I live on the west side of Florida almost down to Ft Myers.

A little rain and breezy enough to cancel a scallop trip in a flat bottom john boat

yikes... 6-12'... those days are way way over for moi.. a fair weather fisherman... the last real boat I had.. a 27' Albemarle.. I wouldn't leave the dock if NOAA was reporting more than 3 footers ...
all I ever got over the years in ruff seas was getting my body banged up--black and blue all over...and little if any fish.... for me it just ain't worth it to be miserable out there... heck I'm retired and can go anytime ... being retired gives me a choice of days to go out there ...maybe I just got smarter over the years.....that's if I had a real boat which I don't anymore..which probably makes me even 'much more smart-er-er'...:D

Me too Ray. After owning a boat of some type for 60 years, I just sold the Lighthouse Lady. I just do not get out enough and hated watching it just sit there.
I have to admit that I have enjoyed having the Pool and the big Bar in the back, the last 6 years, too much. The time on Sunday mornings that I use to fish, I now spend setting up the coolers with Beer, Soda etc and getting the food and libations ready for a cookout.
Maybe one of these days we will have another reunion, I will drive down and will either hitch a ride on someone's boat or just hang out eating and drinking with all you great Guys and Gals
Yeah!!! it may be old age, but I love it.
dang, it sounds like we need to have the next one at Howard's place! Things are as calm here as a church on Monday morning. We are going to try the evening bite in a little while once the heat lets up just a bit. I got "wrapped up" working on the pond pump this morning and morning was over before I got unwrapped. I hope everyone is having a good weekend.

I too sold my boat 2 years ago. It's so much easier to take the plastic kayak fishng. I get great gas mileage and the maintenance costs are real low! LOL! Like Howard said, I hated to see the power boat just sitting in the yard. When I did take her out, I had to clean her before and after the trip.

I have always felt that I could not put my own boat in the water for what I pay to fish a boat for hire. The attendant headaches are non-existent as well. No trailering in & out, no wash-down & clean-up afterward. I just get on Jason's boat, fish, pay the man & go home. Could not be any easier. I could even have my fished cleaned at the dock. I don't..my fish & turtles in the pond love the scraps. And the big plus is that the crew fishes almost every day, & knows where the fish are or should be, and they have a ton of spots on their GPS. I can honestly say I have never been on a trip where everyone aboard was skunked. Most people who catch no fish or very few fish when the bite is good, are not fishing right & not following instructions if someone notices them doing something wrong.
Any of youse guys are welcome to fish the Mad Son with me any time. I am not quite retired yet..one year, nine months, one week..but who's counting?

Ah yes, I do remember that now... although I have forgotten all about Food Lion.
But is it actually catsup, or have you just moved to another cheap chinese 'ke-tsiap' ? :D
Here is an interesting tidbit I found on the subject: (I don't make this stuff up, I swear!)
Origin of word
The word ketchup is derived from the Chinese ke-tsiap, a pickled fish sauce (http://www.diffen.com/difference/Fish_Sauce_vs_Oyster_Sauce). It made its way to Malaysia where it became kechap and ketjap in Indonesia. Catsup and catchup are acceptable spellings used interchangably with ketchup, however, ketchup is the way it is popularly used. "Catsup", which dates to the same time, may well be a different Romanization of the same word, trying to come closer to a sound that doesn't really exist in English.
In the 1800s, "ketchup" was most common in Britain and "catsup" was most common in the US for reasons unknown. The two words (http://www.diffen.com/difference/Category:Words) never really canceled each other out because in their formative years, there weren't spelling dictionaries choosing a "correct" version of words. (Many Americans pronounced "catsup" the same as "ketchup" in any case.) Today, "ketchup" is the dominant term in both countries, though "catsup" still has its strongholds, especially in the southern US.
History
Seventeenth century English sailors first discovered the delights of the "sauce", a Chinese condiment and brought it to the west. Ketchup was first mentioned in print around 1690. The Chinese version is actually more akin to a soy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soy_sauce) or Worcestershire sauce (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worcestershire_sauce).
It gradually went through various changes, particularly with the addition of tomatoes in the 1700s. By the nineteenth century, ketchup was also known as tomato soy. Early tomato versions were much thinner with a consistency more like a soy or Worcestershire sauce. F. & J. Heinz Company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._J._Heinz_Company) began selling tomato ketchup in 1876. By the end of the nineteenth century, tomato ketchup was the primary type of ketchup in the United States, and the decriptor of tomato was gradually dropped.
Ingredients
The basic ingredients in modern ketchup are tomatoes, vinegar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinegar), sugar, salt (http://www.diffen.com/difference/Kosher_Salt_vs_Sea_Salt), allspice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allspice), cloves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloves), and cinnamon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinnamon). Onions, celery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celery), and other vegetables are frequent additions. Catsup may be made of tomatoes, onions, cayenne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayenne), sugar, white vinegar, cloves, cinnamon, celery seed and salt. So the two do not differ much in their ingredients. But different manufacturers may use different ingredients for the two. Sometimes Catsup may be more spicy than Ketchup.
Catsup is known to most experts to use higher quality tomatoes. This fact is not known to most Consumers, and they blindly purchase the inferior ketchup more often.

bottomline KETCHUP rules...
"The word ketchup is derived from the Chinese ke-tsiap, a pickled fish sauce"
It's a descendent of nuoc mam Ray. Saigon soy with tomato. Yech.
:D
However, it makes MickeyD's fries taste better since they stopped deep fat frying.

just in case you have the need...

I swore off the stuff. Some people might drink anything but there is a limit......
I reluctantly tried Vietnamese food today for the first time - pretty doggone good! :)
But I didn't get the nuoc mam.
You probably did have nuoc mam Duff. They use it in cooking - just don't be around the pan (wok) when it goes in
I don't recommend it with martinis or with Scotch. And definitely not with Black Bush

Well so far I cant honestly say that I have NOT found ANY ethnic food that I totally dislike. I love Viet and Thai foods. It goes without saying that mandarin, schewan and cantonese are favorites too , especially since the local name for Vancouver is Hong-couver, and the largest suburb, Richmond is called Litch-mond by the locals!!!
The next largest ethnic group in western BC is east Asian---- if you love hot food , these guys know how to make a vindalu curry that will curl your toe nails!!!
Come to think of it--- Russian food can be a real challenge, and Northwest Indian food is a bit bland. Guess they didnt have a Texas BBG slow roaster for the deer!!!
As far a seafood-- I have found that listening to people that are unwilling to try new foods, only leads to stagnation. I have tried pretty much everything that I can catch ( Howard-- this is your queue----fat guy jokes permitted!!
:D ) Some of the critters have been real duds--- but man alive-- I have found some good ones that most overlook.
Now-- to get back to cats/ketchup--- I am REALLY POed at Heinz. The squeeable bottle is nothing more than an excuse to water down what used to be a good product. SHAME!!!!

Gotta be careful with fish in restaurants.
Shortly after moving here, I ordered a "gruben sandwich" at a local restaurant. Took the 1st bite and said "Yikes"!
I had expected grouper and whatever was between the slices of toast, it certainly was not that.
I inquired from the waitress what kind of fish it was and she said "Basa"
I just didn't like the taste and passed on it, but when I got home, did some research.
It is Vietnamese farmed catfish - they grow them in pens under their homes over the rivers there and there are all kinds of pollutants, dangerous chemicals and waste in that water.
That stuff is flat nasty and now, I understand has made the "do not consume"
list.
Most of us are flat spoiled in that we catch our own and know what good, fresh fish tastes like and that is good.

On liberity in the Philippines I had a chance experance the Balut which is a unhatched duck egg that is buried in the ground until it's ripe:D
I was stuck out in town with my girlfriend after curhew and sent her out for something to eat, she comes back with a bag of Baluts. Not what I expected but gave it the ol' Navy try. Can't say I sent her out for seconds but it kept me going all night:rolleyes:
Here's a utube to work up an appetite.
