-- Dan--

last time a Cat 4 was forecasted for the Myrtle Beach area was Floyd back in '99... everyone from Jacksonville( well I guess not everyone a-hem ahem right Howard)..to Savannah to Charleston got on on the roads for two days for an evacuation before it changed from a Cat 3 to Cat 4... we stayed home...

....until they changed the forecast from Cat 3 to Cat 4 hitting Myrtle which put us in the upper right quadrant--not good.. Jack always said never ever stay for a Cat 4.. so we got on the road early on the morning before it hit and the roads were actually empty--scary like-- as all the problems with traffic jams were the two day before with clogged roads...

it was actually a nice trip down over to Atlanta.. first time we were there...no motel rooms ..as in zero...were available along the way on that 6-7 hour drive and we wound up finally staying at the Marriot Residence Inn Hotel in downtown Atlanta ......me.. Pat... thee cat and the computer---- right next to a Macy's Dept store...the Hotel uses Macy's parking lot.... so how bad could that be... at least one of us was happy while she shopped ...

returned home 3 days later.. the house was still there.. Floyd hit as a high Cat 2 at 2am.. still glad we beat-feet rather than take that chance... heck as long as we were covered if the house wasn't there when we got back home .. I would have just called State Farm to go pick up their house in Little River Inlet and send me a check...

Just looked at the 8AM report. Ray I think you are the Magnet. How about you head for Washington D.C and we can clear out the Dipsh*ts before the election.

Just be safe my friend.

The East Bahamas buoy registered 48' last night: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=41046

That's a nasty storm. They are evacuating the OBX. Kevin was planning to go to the Deleware beach for the weekend. I darn sure wouldn't head east if I were him.

We have a couple of bedrooms available Ray. And the casinos are only an hour or so north ;)

naw... it's heading north of us..might brush.. or maybe crush.... the Outer Banks.... as I heard earlier this morning that Ocracoke Island has a mandatory evacuation for non-residents in effect.. Ocracoke is just south of Hatteras http://goo.gl/maps/24J8 then head on up to Joisey and Long Island.. they have watches out already

...and from us at the stateline to Hatteras it's about 195 miles as the crow flies up the coast http://goo.gl/maps/bALx

looks like they are backed up coming off that great continent of nothing-- from the Cape Verde Islands area

and thank you mon amie...

PK, I do not think that heading to Lung Gyland would be the answer either. They are battening down the hatches there.

Stay out of harms way.

we're staying put... nothing going on here.. high clouds.. light wind and no rain so far... a few clouds spinning from the outer bands..

I just used this to calculate how far it's from us at 5pm 190NM SSE of us...
in case anyone has the need http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gccalc.shtml?

here's a few Marine Offshore forecasts... pick a color...

neither heading up to 'Lung Guylan' nor to the OBx is the best course of action... we ain't movin'... it's ok here..

saw watches and warnings from LI to Cape Cod for tomorrow nite/Sat morning.. I would guess Suffolk County and the east end of LI will get slammed

thanx.. saw that... a hard left would be NO Good at this point... actually thought it would be passing by us farther out at sea.. guess not..
current Wilmington Radar loop... you can see it at the outer edges of the Wilmington Radar's range

Heck Mont. Wasn't that a 50' sea that emptied out the fridge and all the starboard lockers on one snapper trip on the yat'chet? I recall crawling (sober) to the cooler with the wine it that evening.

we never got a drop of rain here( yippee) ... Earl continued it's path offshore ... winds picked up a smidge .. nothing out of the normal for here ..maybe with a gust or two 20-25mph in early afternoon

Glad Earl missed you guys, Ray. I think Howard has an excellant idea. You owe it to your country to go to Washington, DC next time a big Hurricane is heading up the coast. See if you can stay with Jim Cantore, he always survives!

I spoke to a friend on Cape Cod this morning. They were told by the media to prepare for 90 mph winds. She spent all day yesterday clearing her back porch & bringing things inside. At midnight last night, the winds peaked...at 28 mph. The media strikes again!

I understand that predicting weather is iffy, but I really wish they could get a little closer to the mark than they so often do.

then again.. with a Cat 4 storm originally hanging out there you can't really let your guard down.. remember what happened with Charley to s/w florida as Capt Dan can attest to... they thought it was gonna keep tracking north then.. oops... right turn Clyde..as a Cat 4
